Watch a serious tournament angler today and you'll probably notice something before they ever make a cast:

There are a lot of electronics on that boat.

Multiple graphs at the bow. More screens at the console. Forward-facing sonar. Dedicated transducers. Separate power. Carefully positioned mounts.

It's easy to look at a tournament boat and assume you need the same $10,000+ electronics setup to get the benefits of forward-facing sonar.

You don't.

Tournament anglers build their electronics around a very specific job: finding fish quickly, interpreting what's happening underwater, and making decisions as efficiently as possible.

That doesn't necessarily mean every recreational angler needs three graphs at the bow. But there are some useful lessons you can take from the way competitive anglers build their forward-facing sonar systems.

Let's break down what you'll commonly see, why tournament anglers set their boats up this way, and how you can apply the same principles without turning your boat into an electronics showroom.

Why Do Tournament Anglers Run So Many Electronics?

First, understand the goal. Tournament anglers aren't adding electronics just because more screens look impressive. Different electronics can serve different purposes. One display might be dedicated to forward-facing sonar and another might show mapping. And the others might display traditional sonar or side imaging.

By separating those functions, an angler can see multiple types of information simultaneously without constantly switching screens. But not entirely necessary. 

The Forward-Facing Sonar System

At the center of many modern tournament setups is forward-facing sonar.

The three major platforms are:

  1. Garmin LiveScope
  2. Lowrance ActiveTarget
  3. Humminbird MEGA Live

Each gives anglers the ability to see fish and structure in real time ahead of the boat.

Which one an angler chooses can depend on existing electronics, sponsorships, personal preference, and how the rest of the boat is configured.

The fundamental purpose is the same:

Find targets before you cast and see what's happening after your lure enters the water.

The Dedicated Forward-Facing Sonar Screen

One thing you'll commonly see on sophisticated electronics setups is a graph primarily dedicated to forward-facing sonar. Because it takes up a good amount of screen space such as fish, bait, structure, the bottom, and your lure. 

When you shrink that view down to one portion of a split screen, it can become harder to interpret—especially from several feet away on the bow. A dedicated screen allows the sonar image to use the entire display.

Do You Need a Huge Screen?

Not necessarily. Bigger screens can make information easier to see, but they also bring tradeoffs.

A larger graph generally means:

  • More physical space
  • More weight
  • More power demand
  • Higher cost

A tournament angler standing behind multiple graphs all day may value screen size differently than someone carrying a portable system onto the ice or moving it between boats.

This is where you need to build for your application, not someone else's.

So what's the other screen doing?

Often, something completely different.

An angler might dedicate another display to:

  • Mapping
  • 2D sonar
  • Side imaging
  • Down imaging
  • Waypoints
  • Other navigation information

This allows forward-facing sonar to remain visible while the angler references another type of information.

Organize information so you aren't constantly fighting your electronics.

Some Anglers Run Three Screens at the Bow

Yes, it can get even more extreme.

High-level tournament boats sometimes have three or more displays positioned at the bow. Does an average angeler need this? Probably not.

And we'd actually caution against assuming that more screens automatically make you a better fisherman.

Every additional graph adds:

  1. Cost
  2. Weight
  3. Power consumption
  4. Wiring
  5. Mounting requirements
  6. Complexity

At some point, you're managing electronics instead of using them. Tournament anglers may accept those tradeoffs because seconds and small pieces of information can matter in competition. Your Saturday fishing trip probably has different priorities.

What Screen Size Do Tournament Anglers Use?

There's no universal tournament standard. You'll see a range of display sizes depending on brand, boat layout, fishing style, and personal preference. Larger displays have obvious advantages.

  1. They're easier to see from a distance.
  2. Forward-facing sonar targets can appear larger.
  3. Split-screen views become more usable.
  4. Mapping is easier to interpret.

But bigger isn't automatically better for every application. For portable electronics, a smaller display can dramatically reduce the overall footprint and weight of the system.

That's especially relevant now that forward-facing sonar systems and displays continue to evolve. If you're building a portable setup, ask:

Common Garmin LiveScope Tournament Setups

Garmin LiveScope is extremely common in forward-facing sonar fishing. A typical LiveScope Plus system uses an LVS34 transducer along with Garmin's GLS 10 sonar module.

That means the complete system needs to account for:

  • Compatible Garmin display
  • LVS34 transducer
  • GLS 10 sonar module
  • Power
  • Mounting system
  • Transducer mounting or pole system

For a permanently installed tournament boat, the GLS 10 can be mounted in a protected location and wired into the boat's electronics system.

For a portable setup, you need somewhere for that module to live. You will see many anglers with a Summit Fishing Shuttle on their boat. Instead of figuring out where to mount every individual component each time you move the system, the graph, sonar module, battery, and wiring can stay together.

Common Lowrance ActiveTarget Tournament Setups

Lowrance ActiveTarget is another major forward-facing sonar platform used by competitive anglers. Like LiveScope, ActiveTarget systems can include a separate sonar module in addition to the display and transducer. That means installation needs to account for more than simply attaching a transducer and plugging it into the graph.

Depending on the angler's Lowrance electronics setup, the bow may include a dedicated ActiveTarget display along with another graph for mapping and other sonar functions.

Common Humminbird MEGA Live Tournament Setups

Humminbird's MEGA Live platform is particularly attractive to anglers already invested in the Humminbird and Minn Kota ecosystem.

An angler may combine MEGA Live with compatible Humminbird displays, mapping, other sonar technologies, and trolling motor integration. This highlights something important about tournament electronics:

The individual sonar product isn't the entire setup.

You're building an ecosystem.

The graph, transducer, trolling motor, mapping, networking, power system, and mounting hardware all need to work together.

That's why choosing forward-facing sonar based solely on which image looks best in a YouTube video can be shortsighted. Think about the complete system.

The Transducer Mounting Setup Matters More Than People Realize

You can buy the best forward-facing sonar system available and still have a frustrating experience if you can't easily point the transducer where you want to look. Forward-facing sonar is directional. If your transducer is pointed toward 12 o'clock and the fish is at 3 o'clock, you're looking in the wrong place. Tournament anglers need to quickly control where they're scanning. There are different ways to accomplish this, including mounting the transducer in relation to a trolling motor or using an independent transducer pole.

Why Use an Independent Transducer Pole?

An independent pole gives the angler direct control over where the forward-facing sonar is looking. This becomes especially useful when you want to look in one direction while the boat or trolling motor is doing something else. For example, the boat is moving forward or your trolling motor is making steering corrections. With independent directional control, you can keep watching that target.

Tournament equipment sometimes looks intimidating because everything is optimized to an extreme degree. But the basic job of a forward-facing sonar pole is simple:

Hold the transducer securely and let you control where it's pointing.

  • How it mounts to your specific boat

If you're moving the system between boats, portability becomes even more important.

A transducer pole is only useful if you have a good way to attach it to the boat. And boats aren't universal. Some anglers want a permanent mount. Others have track systems. Others don't want to drill holes into their boat at all. The mounting solution should fit the way the boat is actually used. This is also why track adapters and different mounting angles matter.

A mount that works perfectly on one gunwale may not work on another boat with a completely different track orientation or surface angle.

Graphs need power. Forward-facing sonar modules need power. Accessories need power. Add multiple screens and suddenly your electronics system has a meaningful electrical demand.

Tournament anglers can't afford to have electronics shutting down halfway through competition. That's why battery capacity and power distribution deserve just as much planning as the graphs themselves.

More Screens = More Power

This sounds obvious, but it's easy to overlook when upgrading.

Imagine you go from:

Your power requirements have changed significantly.

The battery that comfortably handled your old electronics may not be the right battery for your new setup.

Battery Capacity (Ah) ÷ Current Draw (A) = Approximate Runtime

If your complete electronics system averages 5 amps, for example, the theoretical calculation for a 32Ah battery would be:

32Ah ÷ 5A = 6.4 hours

Real-world runtime can vary, so that shouldn't be treated as a guarantee. You also want reasonable reserve capacity. But the calculation gives you a starting point. The right battery isn't necessarily the biggest one available. t's the one appropriately sized for your electronics and fishing day. Multiple graphs can mean an angler still has usable electronics if one component has an issue.

They may also carry:

You probably don't need a duplicate of every piece of equipment you own. But carrying a few small replacement components is smart for any serious fishing trip.

1. One Quality Graph

Choose a screen large enough for you to comfortably interpret forward-facing sonar.

2. One Forward-Facing Sonar System

LiveScope, ActiveTarget, or MEGA Live depending on your preferred electronics ecosystem.

3. A Properly Sized Battery

Enough capacity for the electronics and length of time you actually fish.

4. An Independent Transducer Pole

So you can intentionally aim the sonar where you want to look.

5. A Secure Boat Mount

Something that fits your boat and allows the pole to operate properly.

6. Clean Wiring

Keep connections protected and organized.

7. A Shuttle if Portability Matters

If you want to move the electronics between boats, seasons, or applications, keeping the system together can simplify everything. That's already an extremely capable setup. You don't need five screens to take advantage of forward-facing sonar.

 

When Does a Second Graph Make Sense?

Once you've used forward-facing sonar for a while, you may decide you want another screen. A second graph makes sense when you frequently find yourself switching between information. For example, you want forward-facing sonar full-screen but you also want your map visible. Rather than constantly switching views, a second display solves that problem. That's a legitimate reason to add electronics. Add equipment when it solves a problem.

Don't Build a Pro's Boat if You Don't Fish Like a Pro

This might be the most important part of the entire article. Professional and high-level tournament anglers build boats around competition. They may fish extremely long days. They may need several sonar technologies available simultaneously. They may run large displays because they need information visible instantly. They may have sponsorship relationships that influence which equipment they use. They may replace and upgrade electronics more frequently than the average angler.

Your needs might be completely different.

If you fish four-hour evening trips from a 16-foot aluminum boat, copying a tournament bass boat's electronics system doesn't necessarily make sense. Take the principles from tournament setups. Not necessarily the parts list.

The Tournament Lessons Worth Copying

1. Give forward-facing sonar enough screen space. Don't make the image so small that you can't interpret it.

2. Control where your transducer is pointing. Forward-facing sonar is only useful when you're looking in the right direction.

3. Plan your power. Know what your electronics consume and make sure your battery can comfortably support them.

4. Keep wiring organized. More electronics require better cable management, not more tangled wires.

5. Build around how you actually fish. Every component should have a purpose.

6. Keep your system serviceable. You should be able to access connections, replace components, and troubleshoot without dismantling half the boat.

 

Build the System, Not Just the Sonar
